A Day in the Life at Pawz and Purz Maine Coons

A Day in the Life at Pawz and Purz Maine Coons
Life at Pawz and Purz Maine Coons is rarely quiet.
Between feeding, cleaning, cuddling, grooming, weighing kittens, answering messages, updating families, and keeping up with everyday life, there is always something happening.
And honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Mornings Start With the Cats
Our day usually begins with checking on everyone.
We look at how everyone is feeling, who is hungry, who wants attention first, and whether anything seems different from the day before.
Food and fresh water come next, along with litter box cleaning and a quick check of each cat’s overall condition.
When we have kittens, mornings can be especially busy.
Kittens are weighed regularly when they are young, and we pay close attention to growth, appetite, energy, and development.
Those early days can involve a lot of careful observation.
Feeding Is More Than Just Filling Bowls
Nutrition is a big part of our daily routine.
Our cats and kittens are offered a varied diet that may include Purina Pro Plan wet and kibble formulas, Tiki Cat wet food, and SMACK dehydrated raw food.
We also use supplements such as NuVet as part of our overall wellness routine.
Feeding time is also a good opportunity to observe behaviour.
Who is eating normally?
Who suddenly seems less interested?
Who is trying to steal everyone else’s food?
With a multi-cat household, you learn very quickly that meals can tell you a lot.
Cleaning Never Really Ends
This is probably the less glamorous side of breeding that people do not always see on social media.
There is a lot of cleaning.
Litter boxes, bedding, floors, food dishes, kitten areas, carriers, toys, blankets, and just about everything else gets cleaned constantly.
Kittens are adorable.
They are also messy.
Maintaining a clean environment is incredibly important to us, so cleaning is part of every single day.
Sometimes it feels like the vacuum and washing machine are basically part of the breeding program.
Socialization Happens All Day Long
Because our kittens are raised in our home, socialization is not something we do for a few minutes and then stop.
It happens naturally throughout the day.
Kittens hear household sounds, see people moving around, experience different rooms, get picked up, cuddled, played with, and handled regularly.
They learn what normal home life feels like.
We also gently introduce things like:
Nail trims
Paw handling
Brushing
Carriers
Household noises
Different toys and surfaces
Everyday routines
These little experiences help build confidence before kittens leave for their new homes.
There Is Always Time for Play
Play is a huge part of kitten development.
Interactive toys, tunnels, climbing structures, scratching posts, and good old-fashioned zoomies all help kittens build strength, coordination, and confidence.
It is also one of the best ways for us to learn their personalities.
Some kittens are fearless.
Some are thinkers.
Some are climbers.
Some would rather sit in your lap and watch everyone else cause trouble.
And then there is always at least one kitten who believes every object in the house is personally there for their entertainment.
We Spend a Lot of Time Observing
A big part of responsible breeding is simply paying attention.
We watch how kittens move, eat, play, interact, sleep, and grow.
We notice personality changes.
We notice who is confident and who may need a little more encouragement.
We notice coat changes, weight gain, social behavior, and how each kitten develops over time.
That daily observation helps us understand each kitten as an individual.
Keeping in Touch With Families
Another part of our day is often spent answering messages.
We talk with prospective families, Priority Waitlist families, and families who already have one of our kittens.
We answer questions about:
Upcoming litters
Kitten selection
Colors
Paw type
Food
Go-home preparation
Settling in
General kitten care
We also love receiving updates from previous litters.
A photo of one of our kittens stretched across a couch or cuddled up with their family can completely make our day.
Behind the Cute Photos Is a Lot of Work
Social media tends to show the fun parts.
Fluffy kittens.
Big paws.
Funny videos.
Cuddles.
And yes, there is a lot of that.
But behind every photo is also cleaning, vet appointments, health testing, record keeping, feeding, grooming, paperwork, contracts, applications, planning, and a lot of time spent worrying over every tiny detail.
Responsible breeding is not just producing kittens.
It is caring for the entire picture.
We Keep Our Program Small for a Reason
One of the biggest reasons we keep our breeding program small is because we want to remain hands-on.
We want to know every kitten.
We want to spend time with them.
We want them raised in our home, not in a separate area where we only visit them for feeding and cleaning.
Keeping our litters limited allows us to give each kitten the individual attention they deserve.
Evenings Are Usually Cat Time Too
By evening, everyone has usually settled into a quieter rhythm.
There may be one more round of feeding, cleaning, checking litter boxes, cuddles, grooming, or kitten play.
And then, just when we think the house is finally calm, someone gets the zoomies.
That is life with Maine Coons.
Why We Love It
Breeding can be exhausting.
There are sleepless nights, busy mornings, vet visits, messes, worries, and plenty of moments where the day does not go according to plan.
But then there are the moments that make everything worth it.
Watching a newborn kitten thrive.
Seeing a shy kitten become confident.
Watching a family meet their kitten.
Receiving a photo months later and seeing how loved that kitten is.
Those are the moments that remind us why we do this.
At Pawz and Purz Maine Coons, our cats and kittens are part of our everyday lives.
They are not separate from our family.
They are part of it.
And every day, even the chaotic ones, is built around giving them the best start we possibly can.
Pawz and Purz Maine CoonsWe love them until you can. ❤️
