How Big Do Maine Coons Get? What Future Owners Should Know

One of the first things people notice about a Maine Coon is their size.
They're often called the gentle giants of the cat world, and social media is full of photos of enormous Maine Coons being held by their owners.
But how big do Maine Coons actually get?
And does having a bigger Maine Coon mean you have a better example of the breed?
Not necessarily!
How Much Does a Maine Coon Weigh?
Adult Maine Coons can vary considerably in size.
Males are generally larger and heavier than females, but genetics, nutrition, activity level and overall body structure all play a role in a cat's eventual adult size.
It's important to remember that healthy weight matters much more than reaching a particular number on the scale.
A Maine Coon should never be overfed simply because someone wants them to become an exceptionally large cat.
Maine Coons Grow Slowly
One of the biggest differences between Maine Coons and many other domestic cats is how long they take to mature.
While many cats reach their adult size relatively quickly, Maine Coons can continue developing for several years.
That adorable little kitten you bring home still has a LOT of growing to do!
Over time, you'll notice changes not only in weight but also in body length, muscle development, coat and that beautiful Maine Coon appearance.
What About Those HUGE Maine Coons Online?
We've all seen them.
Someone holds up a Maine Coon on social media and suddenly the cat looks almost as big as the person!
Some Maine Coons genuinely are exceptionally large, but photographs can also make cats appear much bigger depending on the camera angle and how they're being held.
There is no guarantee that a Maine Coon kitten will grow into a 20-, 25- or 30-pound adult.
Responsible breeding should focus on health, temperament and breed characteristics—not simply producing the biggest cat possible.
Bigger Isn't Always Better
We understand why people love the impressive size of the Maine Coon. It's certainly part of their appeal.
But we'd much rather see a healthy, appropriately conditioned Maine Coon than an overweight cat being celebrated simply because of the number on the scale.
Maintaining a healthy body condition is especially important for a large breed.
Good nutrition, appropriate exercise and regular veterinary care all contribute to keeping your Maine Coon healthy throughout their life.
When Will My Maine Coon Be Fully Grown?
Patience!
One of the joys of owning a Maine Coon is watching them develop.
Your kitten's appearance at six months may be very different from how they look at one, two or even three years old.
Their body fills out, their coat develops and their features continue to mature.
It's one of the reasons we love receiving updates from our kitten families—we get to watch those tiny kittens grow into absolutely magnificent adults.
Choose Health Before Size
If you're searching for a Maine Coon kitten, try not to choose a breeder based solely on who promises the largest kittens.
Ask about health testing, temperament
