What we feed our Maine Coons

What We Feed Our Maine Coon Kittens — and Why

One of the questions we’re asked most often is, “What do you feed your Maine Coon kittens?”

Nutrition is incredibly important during the first year of a Maine Coon’s life. These gentle giants grow much longer than the average cat, so we want our kittens to head to their new families already accustomed to a nutritious, varied diet.

What Our Kittens Eat

At Pawz and Purz Maine Coons, our kittens are introduced to a combination of quality dry, wet, and dehydrated raw food.

Our current favourites include:

Orijen KittenWe offer Orijen Kitten as a dry food option. It provides a convenient, nutrient-dense food that our kittens are familiar with before leaving our home.

Tiki Cat Baby PâtéWet food is an important part of our kittens' routine. Tiki Cat Baby pâté has a soft texture that works wonderfully when kittens are first learning to eat solid food.

SMACK Dehydrated Raw FoodSMACK is another food we love incorporating into our cats' diet. It is made in Canada and uses whole-food ingredients in a convenient dehydrated format.

Why We Introduce Different Foods

We don't want our kittens growing up accustomed to only one flavour or texture.

Introducing several appropriate foods while they're young can make transitioning into their new home easier and gives their families more flexibility when deciding what feeding routine works best for them.

It also means our kittens experience different textures—from pâté to kibble and dehydrated raw—while they're still young and curious.

Should You Keep Feeding the Same Food?

When your kitten first comes home, we recommend keeping their diet familiar.

Moving to a new home is already a big change. New people, smells, sounds and routines can all be exciting but stressful for a kitten. Keeping their food consistent during this transition removes one unnecessary change.

If you'd eventually like to switch foods, we recommend doing it gradually once your kitten has settled into their new home.

Feeding a Maine Coon Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

Every cat is different.

Their nutritional needs can change depending on age, activity level, body condition and individual preferences. What works beautifully for one Maine Coon may not be perfect for another.

As your kitten grows, your veterinarian can also help you determine appropriate portions and make sure your Maine Coon maintains a healthy body condition.

Our Favourite Products

We regularly get asked by our kitten families what food, litter and other products we use in our own cattery.

Rather than keeping our favourites a secret, we've created a Products We Use & Recommend section on our website where you can find many of the same products our kittens grow up with.

Some links or discount codes on our website may provide Pawz and Purz with a commission or partnership benefit. We only recommend products we genuinely use, have experience with, or feel comfortable recommending.

Because when one of our kittens leaves Pawz and Purz, we want their family to feel prepared for everything that comes next.
